What Clarity Does Trivia Provide?
This week "Brain rot" was declared word of the year!
Brain rot is defined as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) mostly that can be called trivia.
This took me back to an intriguing idea I encountered while reading Stoicism: "What clarity does trivia provide?"
In stoicism, "Trivia" refers to unimportant, insignificant, or superficial matters that distract from what truly matters in life.
We often get caught up in chasing information, facts, answers and outcomes, forgetting to ask if these pursuits add real value to our understanding of ourselves or our work.
In our day-to-day lives, we are constantly surrounded by questions—some profound, others mundane. A seemingly simple question like "Who are you?" can unfold into layers of introspection, depending on how deeply we choose to engage with it.
In administration, for example, the tendency to focus on facts often overshadows the need to analyze ideas or comprehend the larger logic.
Yet trivia isn't just facts. It is often the information that fills the space around us without adding any meaning. The aim should be cut through the noise and focus on what aligns with our knowledge of self.
So, the question arises:
As individuals, our reflections, actions, and conversations ultimately shape who we are and who we aspire to become. To truly gain clarity, we need to focus on what lies within our control and accept the randomness of the world around us. Wisdom lies not in brooding over the uncontrollable but in understanding what truly matters.
Ask yourself:
In the end, clarity begins with self-knowledge, and it’s here that true freedom lies. Let’s not get lost in the noise. Let’s ask the questions that matter.
As Marcus Aurelius wrote in Meditations:
"You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do and say and think."
