It was an ordinary day in Kolkata, until an unexpected conversation unveiled a hidden world of ghostly wonders and heroic hearts.

While traveling to the office one day, I was brainstorming about the tourism potential of West Bengal with a batchmate. The vibrant culture, the serene landscapes, and the delicious cuisine were all part of our enthusiastic discussion.

Little did I know, my driver, Shahnawaz Ji—a man as calm as a monk and as professional as a Swiss watch—was eavesdropping with great interest.

Shahnawaz Ji was always calm and professional, never one to engage in frivolous talk. However, as I finished my monologue on Bengal’s tourism, he turned his head slightly and said, “Madam, have you ever heard of the Bhootiya Circuit?”

Curiosity piqued, I asked him to explain. He told me about Bengal's untapped potential in ghost tourism. He added Tourists flocked to the state not just for its beauty, but to experience its eerie, supernatural tales.

"There are many sites where people claim to see ghosts," he said with a mysterious smile. "But the most fascinating is the National Library. They say a Christian ghost from the British times haunts it. As they are Christian, the Hindu priests can’t exorcise it. They are the most dangerous"

Intrigued by this peculiar insight, I reached the Tourism Department. To my surprise while discussing ideas, I came to know that the Bhootiya Circuit was indeed under active consideration. Yet, the idea was dropped, perhaps due to the "practical" challenges of guaranteeing ghostly appearances!

Shahnawaz Ji was not just a genius with a keen understanding of tourism but also a man with a big heart.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he had volunteered to drive ambulances, ensuring over 2000 families reached the hospital safely. His selfless service earned him the COVID Warrior medal by district administration. His bravery and dedication were commendable.

One day, while discussing his experiences, I asked if he was ever scared of ghosts. He chuckled and replied, “Madam, once you’ve seen the horrors of COVID, no ghost can scare you.”

Shahnawaz Ji's story reveals that brilliance often hides in the shadows, yearning for a chance to shine. When given equal opportunities, even the quietest talents can illuminate the world.

Who knows? Maybe one day, thanks to him, the Bhootiya Circuit will become the crown jewel of West Bengal’s tourism!
